International Symposium on Archaeological Mining History
The International Symposium on Archaeological Mining History was established in 2006 when it was held for the first time in Reichelsheim, Germany. In 2007 the members travelled to Freiberg, also in Germany. Both assemblies, focusing on medieval mining, were succesful in bringing reseachers and officials from several European regions together in a discussion about archaeological mining history in all its aspects.
In 2008 the symposium was held in Valkenburg and Maastricht in the South of the Netherlands and in Kanne - Riemst which is a border region to Belgium. The central theme of the symposium was focused on survey, study and protecting and consolidating the relics of ancient mining activity as part of the historical landscape. In 2009 the 4th symposium was held in Reichelsheim again and focused on Recognition, Investigation and Preservation. In 2010 the location was Freiberg, theme of the 5th symposium was Mining archaeological Research – Interdisciplinary Methodology.
